Client: Dept. of Energy (through Microsoft)
Service: Data Architecture, Report Services
Solution: National Electrical Grid Mgmt System
Microsoft, supporting a DOE initiative to reduce the occurrence of brown outs in the North American Electrical Power Grid, asked TrueTandem to build a data warehouse and a suite of reports to analyze power fluctuations in nation’s power grid. This assignment was especially challenging since there are 420 stations across North American that monitor the electrical current 20 times a second requiring a very large data warehouse (10 terabytes per year).
After meeting with the project principles to determine the appropriate information to warehouse, TrueTandem developed a data warehouse using conformed dimensions across multiple data marts to store power statistics for up to five years. The warehouse was developed using SQL 2005 with Microsoft’s Integration Services. InScope developed several daily and monthly statistic reports using Microsoft Report Services to identify trends and potential issues that could lead to brown outs or even black outs.
The application will save the country millions of dollars each year, by spotting issues with the nation’s electric supply before brown outs (or blackouts) occur.
